‘Scientific’ pride
Asst. Prof. Dr. Umut Can Adısönmez from the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), has been awarded the “2026 Young Scientist Encouragement Award” by the International Relations Council (UIK), one of the most prestigious honors in the field. Asst. Prof. Dr. Adısönmez, whose research focuses on topics such as the relationship between identity and security in international relations, ontological security, identity in foreign policy, and the role of social memory, was recognized for his promising work that contributes not only to policy studies but also to theoretical scholarship. Bringing great pride to Izmir University of Economics with this achievement, Asst. Prof. Dr. Adısönmez said, “It is a great source of happiness for me that my work has been recognized and appreciated by the academic community, and that I have been able to bring such a prestigious award to my university.”
Throughout his academic career, Asst. Prof. Dr. Adısönmez has conducted research on emotions in international relations, political psychology, and Middle Eastern politics. He has authored nearly 20 international publications, received more than 310 citations, and secured numerous research grants. In recognition of his outstanding scholarly contributions and future potential in the field of international relations, he was selected to receive the ‘2026 Young Scientist Encouragement Award’ presented by the UIK.

Emphasizing that the strong academic solidarity at Izmir University of Economics played a significant role in his achievement, Asst. Prof. Dr. Adısönmez said, “I conduct research in the field of international relations, particularly on ‘ontological security’ theory. I believe that, in addition to my contributions to this area, my efforts to move beyond empirical regional studies and engage in theoretical work were influential in receiving this award. The strong academic support network at our University, the encouragement of my colleagues, and the environment of open discussion also played an important role in this success.”

Noting that he is currently working on an academic article and a comprehensive book project on ontological security, Asst. Prof. Dr. Adısönmez said, “My goal is for the book I am preparing to become one of the major long-term reference works consulted internationally. It is extremely gratifying to see that my theoretical contributions are valued by the academic community. Receiving an award from the UIK, which is regarded as one of the most respected and prestigious institutions in the field, is a great honor. I would also like to thank my colleagues who encouraged me to apply and who have always supported me throughout this process.”
