IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS FAVOURS A 15 PERCENT DISCOUNT FOR CHILDREN OF ITO MEMBERS
Ekrem Demirtaş, Chairman of Izmir Chamber of Commerce (ITO) and President of IUE Board of Trustees, said that there would be a 15 percent discount for the children of ITO members who will start education at IUE in 2013 – 2014 Academic Year. Demirtaş said, “Our University, which was established by the support of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, is showing its loyalty to the Chamber with this occasion.”
Demirtaş stated that Izmir University of Economics was established in 2001 by Izmir Chamber of Commerce- Education and Health Foundation in order to meet the qualified personnel needs of Izmir business world, reverse the brain drain process, allow Izmir youth to receive education in better economic conditions with their families, and to train well educated youth who can speak foreign languages as required by the globalizing world. He said, “Izmir Chamber of Commerce provided the biggest contribution for the establishment of our University. Our Chamber made the first contribution.” Demirtaş pointed out that, later on, Izmir University of Economics began to expand rapidly by its own means, not depending on any institution, including ITO. He said IUE, which was the first University to provide education in foreign language in Izmir and Aegean Region, was the most preferred foundation university. Demirtaş said:
“Currently, there are 7 Faculties, 3 Schools, 2 Graduate Schools, and 8 Research and Application Centres available at the 40 thousand m2 Balçova Campus, which we own the deed for. They offer 13 associate degree, 34 undergraduate degree, 24 graduate degree, and 5 post graduate degree programs. We’ve become a family of more than 13 thousand people with 6600 students, 649 academicians, and 141 administrative staff along with 6500 alumni. In addition to this, we have a second campus ground of 185 thousand m2 in Güzelbahçe, where the Municipality does not issue a reconstruction permit.
Our goal is to become a world university and we are forging ahead with this issue. The University has ERASMUS program agreements with 105 universities and academic cooperation protocols with 27 universities abroad, and each year many number of students and academicians benefit from these exchange programs.
Izmir University of Economics is one of the 3 foundation universities that were awarded Diploma Supplement Label by European Commission. The University was also awarded the “ECTS Label”, which only 40 universities in Europe hold currently. The ECTS Label enables students to get the courses they took at Izmir University of Economics approved at European universities. Our University is the only foundation university in Turkey to be awarded with ECTS Label. The universality of the education we provide with these titles is also accepted by the European Commission.
Izmir University of Economics was chosen as a pilot university for Bologna Process and Lisbon Strategy studies that take place in universities since 2006 in order to establish National Qualifications Framework in Higher education.
The University aims to develop entrepreneurial graduates. Izmir University of Economics was among the most entrepreneurial universities, and the only foundation university in the Aegean and Mediterranean Regions according to the “Inter-University Entrepreneurship and Innovation Index 2012” ranking announced by the Ministry of Science, Industry, and Technology.
Izmir University of Economics also places a high importance on scientific research activities with its dynamic and qualified academic personnel in parallel with its innovative approach in education. Based on URAP lab results, IUE qualified to be on the same list with the leading universities of Turkey and ranked among world universities. Demirtaş, who stated that Izmir Chamber of Commerce- Education and Health Foundation and Izmir Chamber of Commerce have unbreakable ties, said, “As we always say it, this University is the university of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, of Izmir Business World.” He said that they wanted to make a meaningful gesture to Izmir Chamber of Commerce and its members. He said:
“We applied to Higher Education Council, and expressed that we wanted to make a 15 percent discount in tuition fees for the children of members of Izmir Chamber of Commerce starting from 2013-2014 academic year, and they accepted our proposal. It will start in the coming academic year. There will be a 15 percent discount for first degree blood relatives of members of Izmir Chamber of Commerce who are registered to Izmir Trade Registry Office, and representatives of legal persons who have the authority to represent and bind, and for the first degree blood relatives of people who have partnerships for the past year. Members of Izmir Chamber of Commerce who are real persons or legal persons, will be able to benefit from discount only once for each membership. Izmir University of Economics will be paying tribute to Izmir Chamber of Commerce with this practice. As the University gives back to Izmir business world multiples of what it received from the Chamber, the already firm and strong ties between the two institution
