PARCHMENT FROM PAST TO FUTURE
2nd century BC. There is a great rivalry between the Library of Pergamon and the Library of Alexandria. The writing medium of the time is papyrus, and manuscripts are stored in rolls. The Egyptian king Ptolemy V forbids the export of papyrus outside Egypt. When the Pergamon Library was in a difficult situation, King Eumenes II of Pergamon ordered to find a material to write on.
The librarian Krates manages to produce a leather from goat skin, suitable for writing. The name of Bergama at that time was Pergamon. This writing medium is called Carta Pergamena; Pergamon Paper. It became widespread in all languages, taking its name from Pergamon: Parchment, Pergament, Pergamena, Pergamino.
With the widespread use of parchment, the books written are freed from the roll form and become the Codex form we know today, and the encyclopedia emerges. After the arrival of paper in Anatolia around 900, it is gradually withdrawn from these lands. Paper reaches Europe 500 years after Anatolia. For this reason, until 1400, the writing material in Europe was parchment.
From the 15th century onwards, it was mostly used in bookbinding and painting. It was the material preferred by Baroque and Jugendstil artists to achieve natural skin tones. The American Declaration of Independence was written on parchment. Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press, printed 45 of the first 180 copies of the Bible on parchment. Piri Reis created his world map on parchment. The British Parliament still maintains the tradition of writing all its decisions in 2 copies on parchment.
Today, parchment has found more contemporary uses, including wall panels and furniture upholstery. Some of the works in the exhibition are made on 40 x 40 cm real leather parchment glued to wood.
