Minister Şimşek, “All of our students will be given tablet computers. Smart boards will be used for education. Fatih Projects is a very good project for education. We need such qualified projects in order to increase the quality of education. Such projects with international collaborations are very important in terms of increasing the quality of education.”
We drop out of middle school
Şimşek stated that even though a great deal of progress was made in terms of health and gross national income per capita according to UN Human Development Index, Turkey was behind regarding education. He said, “When you look at the population over 25 in Turkey, the time spent in formal education is 6,5 years. In other words, Turkey is a country who drops out of middle school that hardly finished elementary school. The population of 25 years of age is a population category where the efforts of the last 9 years have been insufficient. We transfer good amount of funds, and there is schooling but we fall behind. We allocate funds for education but the proceeds after the funds are low and this shows the quality of the education is low.”
Turkey, Star of the Future
Minister Şimşek, who indicated that Turkey was the star of the future, said that, “We, as a country, make a living the hard way and try to accomplish things on our own. In this sense, the only wealth and future we have is our manpower, and the spirit of entrepreneurship we bear. Turkey has to acquire the sustainable growth in order to take the largest share of the global economy which will reach to 277 trillion dollars in 2050. We are going to have a population of 100 million people in 2050. Our gross national income is projected to be about 5,2 trillion dollars. Turkey, ranks 16th currently, aims to rank among the first 10 in the worldwide economy. We will be the second largest economy in Europe during that period.”
After his speech, Minister Şimşek answered questions by students, academicians and guests. At the end of the conference, President Demirtaş and Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu presented Minister Şimşek with a Knobbed Vase from Batman region where the minister is from.
