An unforgettable ceremony for the graduates
1,800 students who successfully completed their education at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and earned their diplomas were sent off to their new lives at the end of a four-day graduation celebration. Donning their gowns and throwing their caps into the air with great excitement, the graduates fully embraced their joy. Reaching the moment they had dreamed of and eagerly awaited for years, IUE graduates expressed their happiness by hugging their families, professors, and friends, while also taking countless photos to commemorate the day.
The 2024–2025 Academic Year Graduation Ceremonies of Izmir University of Economics were held in the amphitheater on campus. This year's graduation ceremonies were divided into four days, with separate ceremonies held for each faculty and school. This gave graduates more time on stage and earned them enthusiastic applause from attendees. Among those present at the ceremonies were IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu, Izmir Chamber of Commerce (IZTO) Assembly President Selami Özpoyraz, Vice Assembly Presidents Mehmet Tahir Özdemir and Nevzat Artkıy, former IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Aslı Ceylan Öner and Prof. Dr. Gözde Yazgı Tütüncü, members of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce Education and Health Foundation and university board of trustees, academic staff, and families. A specially prepared film titled “Izmir Is in Our Genes”, highlighting the students’ development and contributions to the city, received high praise from the audience.
“ALSO A CELEBRATION OF OUR BELIEF IN STUDENTS”
Speaking at the ceremony, IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu stated that graduation ceremonies are not only a tradition of academia but also a celebration of the belief in the students who have been nurtured. Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu emphasized that IUE graduates are ready to contribute to humanity as competent and well-equipped professionals, responsible citizens, and compassionate global individuals.
“YOU ARE VERY VALUABLE”
Addressing the graduates, Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu delivered a powerful message in his speech saying, “With the knowledge and skills you've gained so far, you’ve rebuilt your worldview and your perception of yourself and others. You’ve become individuals who think, question, and solve problems. You’ve changed. The world is also changing. Global crises, technological leaps, social fractures, and personal anxieties have made uncertainty more visible than ever. You are the graduates of this age of uncertainty; and for that reason, you are incredibly valuable. Because we are on the threshold of a new era where curiosity, adaptability, and critical thinking will outweigh rote memorization, habits, and dogmas. This new era awaits those who can interpret knowledge, make decisions grounded in values, and navigate uncertainty.”
“NEVER LOSE YOUR PASSION FOR LEARNING”
Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu continued as follows: “Graduation is not the end of the road but one of the important milestones in your journey. It is meaningful and worth celebrating. I congratulate you. Know that we are proud of you. Never lose your passion for learning, your curiosity for research, your sense of justice, and your kindness. May your path be bright, and may your conscience and knowledge guide you.”
“TRUST IN THE EDUCATION YOU RECEIVED”
IZTO Assembly President and IUE Board of Trustees Member Selami Özpoyraz also addressed the graduates, saying, “Izmir University of Economics taught you to understand life through science; to identify, analyze, and solve problems throughout your career; to think scientifically; and to lead with intelligence in competitive environments. Like all our graduates, you too will experience the distinction of being part of IUE; because being an IUE graduate is a privilege. Trust in the education you received at our University. Continue learning and striving for excellence with confidence in yourself throughout your life. Never stop dreaming, and never stop working tirelessly to turn those dreams into reality. Remember that the road to success is paved with dreams and hard work. Just like the thousands of students we’ve graduated so far, I have no doubt that you, too, will achieve great things.”
“COUNTDOWN TO THE NEW CAMPUS HAS BEGUN”
Stating that the countdown for the new campus being built in Güzelbahçe has started, Özpoyraz said, “We’ve started. We aim to complete the first phase of the campus by July 2026 and welcome students there. This is one of the largest educational investments in Turkey undertaken in a single phase. We thank everyone involved in bringing this project to life, especially the Board of Trustees President Mahmut Özgener and all board members. The Balçova campus, where you've created your fondest memories, will always hold a special place in your hearts, as university years leave unforgettable marks in one’s life. However, I believe the Güzelbahçe campus will also become your second home. There will be special areas there for the alumni.”
