“Artificial Intelligence in Education” Workshop Held at İzmir University of Economics

İzmir University of Economics (IUE) has taken another significant step in line with its vision of transformation in educational technologies. The “Artificial Intelligence in Education” Workshop, focusing on the effective and ethical use of AI tools in teaching and learning processes, was successfully held on June 11, 2025.
Organized by the IUE Teaching and Learning Center (EKOEĞİTİM-TLC), the workshop began with an opening speech by Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu. Following the opening, Asst. Prof. Esin Çağlayan, Director of the Center, delivered a presentation outlining the aims and scope of the workshop and shared current developments related to the use of AI in higher education. While the morning sessions of the workshop featured presentations introducing participants to current approaches in AI-supported education, the afternoon sessions offered a hands-on learning environment where participants explored practical uses of AI tools in education.
Academics from various disciplines shared insights and examples of AI-supported instructional practices. Asst. Prof. Ali Aslankan, Asst. Prof. Ali Burak Özkaya, Asst. Prof. Hasan Kazdağlı, Asst. Prof. Özge Ertener, Lecturer Taylan Demirkaya, and Research Assistant Dr. Borabay Erbay presented a wide range of AI-based applications, including course and activity design, case and question generation, summarization, and assignment drafting. Ethical principles of AI use were also among the workshop’s key focus areas.
In addition, students Selin Doğa Orhan and Mehmet Arda Uçar took part in the workshop with their capstone projects, developed under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Kutluhan Erol. Aiming to support the integration of artificial intelligence into teaching and learning processes, the workshop marked the first in a new series of events dedicated to showcasing effective practices in this rapidly evolving field.
