They returned with an award from the ‘mock trial’

Eray Dağdelen, Ezgi Ağbayır, and Hakkı Can Sal, who are students at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Law, came in second place at the ‘Prof. Dr. Yaşar Karayalçın Mock Trial Competition’ organized by the European Law Students' Association (ELSA) Ankara Branch. Writing a petition for a case involving trademark and commercial law and arbitration, and making a presentation for the defense, the young students from IUE surpassed numerous teams from across Turkey to bring the award to Izmir.

IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu and Dean of Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr. Sevilay Uzunallı congratulated the students for their success during a meeting with them. Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Akif Gül and Research Assistant Altan Özkan, who prepared the IUE team for the competition, were also among the architects of the achieved success.

Expressing their pride in being awarded in a competition featuring such esteemed and competitive teams in the field of law, fourth-year students Eray Dağdelen, Ezgi Ağbayır, and Hakkı Can Sal said, “The competition takes place in a very serious format where a face-to-face trial environment is provided. We participated in the trial both as the plaintiff and the defendant. We prepared written petitions and made oral defenses. We were in a trial environment that resembled reality. The experienced jurists from our country in the jury carefully evaluated our performance during the trial, how effectively we could apply the knowledge we acquired in theory into practice, and whether we could convey the arguments we defended effectively and with concrete evidence. Many fellow law students from different universities in our country also participated in the competition. At this point, we believe that achieving second place is quite important and valuable. We thank all professors who have trained and contributed to our success to reach where we are today.”

CONTINUOUS SUCCESS

Reminding that they also received the third-place award in the competition held in 2022, Dean, Prof. Dr. Sevilay Uzunallı stated that they made success a continuous achievement as a faculty. Emphasizing that they educate qualified lawyers who have a critical perspective, multidimensional research capability, and make a difference in producing and sharing knowledge, Prof. Dr. Sevilay Uzunallı said, “Eray Dağdelen, Ezgi Ağbayır, and Hakkı Can Sal, who are preparing to graduate this year, brought joy to our faculty by bringing the award. I sincerely congratulate them. I believe that they will continue to represent our University as very good lawyers and achieve new successes in their professional lives. As a faculty, we attach great importance to such competitions and encourage students to participate. I believe that the consecutive awards are also an important indicator of the quality of education in our faculty.”
