‘Ethics’ in human resources at Izmir University of Economics
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) brought those who make a difference in business life together with the professionals. Managers, who make a difference with breakthroughs in business life, shared their experiences at the “3rd Human Resources Summit” intended for human resources managers and employees.
IUE Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, who delivered the opening speech at the event co-organized by IUE Career Guidance Center and IUE Alumni Relations Office, and co-sponsored by Izmir Science and Technology Park and REED Specialist Recruitment, indicated that human resources was one of the key elements of an institution. Prof. Dr. Aşkar said, “Human resources is as important as the finance and technological structure in an institution. Human resources is efficient in managing inter and intra institutional relations and it has to bear a dynamic structure”.
The summit began with Volkan Akay’s (Bay İfade) motivational speech. The “Employee Engagement, Ethics and Compliance Management” session, moderated by IUE General Coordinator Prof. Dr. Murat Borovalı took place with the participation of Emre Çolak, Compliance Manager, Philip Morris, and Member of TEID Executive Board, and Serap Manisalı, HR Manager, Inci Holding.
IUE General Coordinator Prof. Dr. Murat Borovalı stated that coherence of employee and corporate values lied at the root of corporate success, and that accountability in terms of employee and employer should not be perceived as a weakness. Inci Holding HR Manager Serap Manisalı stated that success occurred in an environment where employees felt safe. Compliance Manager of Philip Morris, Emre Çolak pointed that employees and managers acting upon current values rather than past elements was more important in terms of compliance.
‘Mobbing is a long process’
Prof. Dr. Pınar Tınaz, Founding President of Association for Assistance and Education of Mobbing Victims, reported that mobbing did not occur all of a sudden, that human resources and top management of the institution needed to be aware of the risk factors. Prof. Dr. Tınaz said, “Ignoring, belittling, not asking their opinion, not saluting, scolding, mocking, gossiping are considered mobbing behaviors. Additionally, not taking any opinions regarding work into consideration, criticizing the work done destructively are also mobbing. The work environment, frequency of behavior, its manner, and intention are criteria of a real mobbing fact.” Prof. Dr. Tınaz stated that factors such as restructuring in an institution, technological changes, lack of communication increased the mobbing risk, and an official policy for respective institution needed to be identified.
Ayşenur Aydın, Corporate Communication Director, OPET, and President of the Board of the Corporate Communications Association of Turkey delivered “Corporate Communication and Reputation Management” titled speech, and Betül Çorbacıoğlu Yaprak, HR Manager, Mercedes Benz Turk, delivered “Corporate Vitality” titled speech at the conference. The summit ended with a final session, “Harmony beyond Law”, moderated by Ahmet Buğra İlter, Member of IUE Board of Trustees, with the participation of Atty. Ertuğrul Onur, Legal Counsel Head of Coca Cola Beverages, Prof. Dr. Nikos Passas, Northeastern University, and Elçin Yılmaz, Assistant General Manager and Member of the Executive Board of Acıbadem Insurance Company.
