Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı attended the conference on “Foreign Policy of Ottoman Empire and Nationalist Movements in the Period of Decline” organized by the History Club with the contribution of İzmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Arts and Sciences
IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin presented History Professor Ortaylı as a scientist in the field of history who improved himself at all points especially in language, literature, and archeology. Prof. Dr. Ortaylı started his speech by explaining the etymology and content of the term “Diplomacy”. Prof. Dr. Ortaylı gave impressive examples from diplomatic mistakes made in the period of Ottoman Empire and said, “Using diplomacy skillfully is a 100-year adventure of Turkey starting from 1826. Today, we are on the verge of a new turn. But of course, it is not how the government describes. However, it is clear that we are in a different position.”
Prof. Dr. Ortaylı stated that Turkish Republic could not establish its national culture, “We cannot talk about decline in the customs and traditions of Turkey. In those days our name was great but now our content is great.”
At the end of the conference, Prof. Dr. Ortaylı did not leave the conference hall and spent some time with the students, answered their questions. During his speeches, he stated his happiness about being at İzmir University of Economics.
