IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS LEADS THE WAY IN TRANSLATION AS WELL

Students of IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting helps the future translators with their occupational development by bringing the Trados Translation Memory system, used by European Union, to their labs. At their lab updated with Robotel SmartClass system being used in Turkey for the first time as part of the Computer-Assisted Translation Studies course, the students learn their profession by doing simultaneous and consecutive and written translations.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şahin, Lecturer at IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting, who gave information about the lab, said that the first translation lab was established in 2006 with the highest technology and got updated continuously. He said, “Our lab with Robotel Symposium system offers an almost real work environment for students for verbal translation studies. Starting from 2010, with the addition of optical character recognition technology, translation memory systems, voice recognition and text reading technologies, the students got hi tech in written translation as well. And lately, with the help of IT Directorate, the latest version of Trados Translation Memory system, used by European Union also, is established at our lab.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Şahin stated that students studied with equipment close to real work environments and used authentic visual-audial materials and simulation exercises which help them get a step ahead of their careers. He said the graduates were able to find employment at government, private sector, banks, chambers of commerce, municipalities, and education institutions.
