‘International’ Honor for 30 Years of Labor
Prof. Dr. Aydın Akan, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and one of the few Turkish academics selected for the list of the “World’s Most Influential Scientists”, has added a new milestone to his international achievements. Known for his work on signal processing, a field utilized in everything from telecommunications and health technologies to geophysics and space systems, Prof. Dr. Akan has been honored with the ‘2026 Meritorious Service Award’ by the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP). With over 100 international publications throughout his career, Prof. Dr. Akan expressed his pride: “I am happy to bring one of the most prestigious international awards to my University as a reward for my 30 years of labor.”
EURASIP, one of the world's most respected scientific organizations, has been granting this award since 2000 to scientists who make a difference and inspire future generations. This award is presented to only one person each year. Prof. Dr. Akan will receive his award at a ceremony held in Bruges, Belgium, on August 31 - September 4, 2026.
“MY TEXTBOOK IS TAUGHT ABROAD”
Highlighting his previous roles within EURASIP, Prof. Dr. Akan said, “I have conducted numerous studies in the field of signal processing since the 1990s and authored two textbooks. My book, ‘Signals and Systems Using MATLAB’, is used as a curriculum textbook in many higher education institutions worldwide. I also previously served as the Chair of the EURASIP Technical Committee on Biomedical Image and Signal Analytics. I will continue my engineering work with the same excitement and determination as day one.”
“I WILL CONTINUE TO PRODUCE”
Prof. Dr. Akan continued as follows: “For nearly 30 years, I have taught signal processing and supervised 38 PhD and 57 Master’s students to graduation. I have published numerous scientific research papers. Having these efforts crowned with such a meaningful award is incredibly gratifying. I will continue to contribute to science within the strong academic ecosystem of Izmir University of Economics.”
