‘Lecture’ Motivation via Blockchain
Mert Can Uçar, Berk Çoban, Arda Doruk Acar, and Mehmet Sadık Yılmaz, graduates of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), have developed a special application to encourage students to study. The application, named “Campus Crypto Coin,” which awards students virtual points as they study and allows them to use these points at partnered cafes, restaurants, or cafeterias, has been awarded a ‘utility model’ certificate by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.
The application, which can be easily used on mobile phones or computers, was brought to life after approximately one year of work. Every student can register by entering their personal information. Students will open the application when they start studying, and the timer will begin.
To verify that the student is actually studying, meaning they haven't just opened the application and walked away, the app will send questions or notification messages to users at specific intervals. Students will accumulate points for every hour they study and can spend these points at partnered restaurants, cafes, or cafeterias. Developed using a blockchain system under the consultancy of Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayça Kumluca Topallı, a faculty member of the IUE Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, the application will provide opportunities for both students and businesses.
“AN INNOVATIVE APPLICATION”
Congratulating her students on their successful work, Asst. Prof. Dr. Topallı shared details about the application saying, “When we look at existing studies, we see that reward systems can have positive effects on studying. Our goal in this project was for our students to gain experience while designing a functional application that could be easily used in daily life. We are delighted to have achieved this and to have received a ‘utility model’ certificate from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. Campus Crypto Coin is an innovative application that bridges technology and education, developed to increase students’ motivation to study.”
“SUPPORTS THE CAMPUS ECOSYSTEM”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Topallı continued as follows: “One of the elements that makes this project valuable is the use of blockchain technology. Thanks to the blockchain infrastructure, the points earned by students can be recorded in a secure, transparent, and traceable manner thus creating a reliable system for both the students and the businesses collaborating with the application. While students can see how much they study and how many points they earn through the system, businesses can be involved in this process in a controlled and secure way. From the students' perspective, the application encourages regular study habits, supports a more conscious use of time, and contributes to academic success. For businesses, it introduces a new model where they can establish direct contact with students and become part of the campus ecosystem. In this respect, the application serves as a powerful initiative that brings education, technology, and social life together at the same point.”
