International Award for Dr. Adısönmez
İzmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Political Science and International Relations Assistant Professor Umut Can Adısönmez has received the “2026 Young Scientist Encouragement Award”, presented by the International Relations Council of Turkey (UİK) and regarded among the most prestigious awards in the field. Conducting research on topics such as the relationship between identity and security, ontological security, and the role of social memory in international relations, Dr. Adısönmez was deemed worthy of the award for his promising work that contributes not only to policy but also to theory. Bringing great pride to İzmir University of Economics with his achievement, Dr. Adısönmez said, “It is a great source of happiness for me that my studies have been recognized and appreciated by the scientific community, and that I have brought such a prestigious award to my university.”
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Adısönmez has conducted research on emotions in international relations, political psychology, and Middle Eastern politics. He has authored nearly 20 international publications, received more than 310 citations, and secured numerous research grants. Attracting the attention of the academic world through his successful work, Dr. Adısönmez was granted the “2026 Young Scientist Encouragement Award” by UİK, which is presented to promising scholars who stand out with their scientific contributions in the field of international relations.

Stating that the strong academic solidarity at İzmir University of Economics played an important role in his success, Dr. Adısönmez said, “I conduct research in the field of international relations, particularly on ‘ontological security theory.’ I believe that, in addition to my contributions to this field, my work carried out within a theoretical framework by going beyond empirical regional studies was also influential in receiving this award. The strong academic solidarity at our university, the support of my colleagues, and the free environment for discussion also played an important role in this success.”

Noting that he is currently working on an article as well as a comprehensive book project in the field of ontological security, Dr. Adısönmez said, “I aim for the book I am preparing to become a long-term and internationally referenced source. It is extremely gratifying for me that my theoretical work is being recognized and valued by the scientific community. Receiving such an award from UİK, which is regarded as one of the most respected and prestigious institutions in the field, is a great source of pride. I would also like to thank my colleagues who encouraged me to apply and have always supported me throughout this process.”
