The “SHIFT + VCD” exhibition presents a selection of student projects produced during the four-year education process at the Department of Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics. It goes beyond being a mere display of course outputs, instead constructing a learning journey based on change, transfer, and transformation.
Visual communication design stands out as a design discipline that redefines itself in every period, shaped by technological transformations and cultural interactions. The concept of “shift” in the exhibition's title represents a process that transforms not only the skills of design students but also their perspective, production methods, and way of thinking. Each project on display bears the mark of the experiences gained at different class levels in the design process.
The structure of the Visual Communication Design Department, which spans interdisciplinary fields such as typography, photography, moving image, film, digital media, interaction design, and game design, aims to train students to become critically thinking designers. This exhibition highlights the contribution of both students and the academics who guide them to this process of change.
“SHIFT + VCD” invites the viewer to discover the continuity, power of renewal, and courage to change direction in design, as an intergenerational transfer of experience and a space for learning together.
