HERNIATED DISK LOWERS QUALITY OF LIFE

Work conditions, inactivity, lack of exercise may cause herniated disc in lumbar spine by creating muscle and joint problems. World Health Organization statistics revealed that 33% of healthy individuals between the ages of 21-30 developed herniated disc problem, and women had this problem almost twice as much as men did.
Rıdvan Aktan, Lecturer, Physical Therapy Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics, stated that while prevalence of herniated disc problem in all societies was 60%, it was 75% in women and 45% in men. He said that discs in lumbar spine had a standard sequencing and one needed to avoid putting extreme pressure to maintain that sequencing. Aktan said, “It is important to work the muscles around lower back. The bones that form the spine in your back are cushioned by small discs. Located between each of your vertebra in the spinal column, discs act as shock absorbers for the spinal bones. A herniated disc is a fragment of the disc nucleus that is pushed out of the annulus, into the spinal canal through a tear or rupture in the annulus.”
Aktan indicated that many of the patients got a relief through physical therapy designed specifically for them.”
‘Even Weight Distribution on Shoulders’
Aktan suggested using orthopedic mattresses and avoiding lifting heavy stuff unless needed. He recommended correct lifting and moving techniques, such as squatting to lift a heavy object. He also warned about bending and lifting. Aktan stated the following:
“Avoiding an inactive lifestyle and engaging in exercises that strengthen muscles around lower back area might lower the chance for herniated disc. Patients suffering from herniated disc should stay away from unprofessional alternative methods such as cupping, bone setting, etc. The patient may get a temporary relief but it may result in serious damage such as paralysis. Maintaining correct posture when you're sitting and making sure the seat supports your lower back is very important. People who sit at their desks for long times should get up and do stretching every hour or so.”
