IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS STARTED ITS 14TH ACADEMIC YEAR

Izmir University of Economics is excited about starting off 2014 – 2015 Academic Year with its new students. IUE opened its doors for the 14th time to make its students take their first steps towards their careers. The first ceremony of the new academic year started with laying a wreath at Ataturk Monument at Cumhuriyet Square. Ekrem Demirtaş, IUE President of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, IUE Rector, academicians, graduates and students observed a moment of silence. Singing the National Anthem was followed by laying a wreath at Ataturk Monument at Cumhuriyet Square.
Following the ceremony at Cumhuriyet Square, the second ceremony took place at IUE Conference Hall where Celal Kocabaş, Izmir Regional Courts of Justice, High Court Chief Prosecutor, Abdul Batur, Narlıdere Mayor, Mustafa İnce, Güzelbahçe Mayor, Yusuf Öztürk, CEO of Chamber of Marine Commerce Izmir Branch, members of IUE Board of Trustees, academicians, graduates and students attended. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Kentmen Çin, Recipient of Turkish Academy of Sciences “Distinguished Young Scientist Award (GEBIP), 2014”, delivered the first lecture of the new academic year. Also, faculty members who participated in TUBITAK projects were presented their plaques by President Ekrem Demirtaş and Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen at the ceremony.
President Demirtaş emphasized in his opening speech that they were going to ask for help from Aziz Kocaoğlu, Izmir Metropolitan Mayor, about bringing the building of Faculty of Law into existence at Balçova Campus.
Demirtaş, who stated that they wanted to establish a building for Faculty of Law, stressed that they were going to make one last demand from Mayor Kocaoğlu. Demirtaş said, “We do not beg for anything. We may not have lots of money but we do not have any debts either. We are trying to make Balçova Campus perfect. Mr. Mayor enabled us to construct Faculty of Fine Arts and Design building; we are now constructing the School of Foreign Languages. We designated a spot for Faculty of Law building. If we can get the permit, we will complete our structuring. We are going to make one last demand from Mr. Mayor”.
‘Second campus at Güzelbahçe’
President Demirtaş stated that they purchased 21 thousand square lots for Faculty of Medicine Education and Research Hospital; he said “Güzelbahçe Campus lot was about 185 decares. We purchased the adjacent lot and now it became a total of 210 decares. “Ekonomi Koleji” (education complex) from kindergarten to university will be built here. It will be a science based education. We want to make it an exemplary Science High School because Faculty of Engineering and the 2nd Techno park will also be here. There will also be sports hall, Olympic swimming pool, football field, tennis courts, and a pond.”
IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen reminded that Izmir University of Economics ranked among the first 500 universities worldwide where only 23 universities from Turkey were able to make it on the list. The Rector said that they were decided to increase collaborations with technology. Prof. Dr. Esen also stated that they will be implementing distance or interactive learning projects via digital campus system.
İrem Aydın, who was admitted to IUE Department of Translation and Interpretation with the highest score this year, stated that she preferred IUE because of high-quality teaching staff, double major options, and departments equipped with the latest technology.
At the end of the ceremony, IUE Folk Dances Club proudly presented “İzmir’in Kavakları Vatan İçin Dökülüyor” titled performance, directed by IUE Music Consultant Alaskar Abbasov.
