4th International Student Conference is held at IUE
In his opening speech, Izmir University of Economics Rector Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin said, “The main aim of this organization is to bring students from different cultures that share common interests, facilitate the exchange of ideas, encourage joint research projects and more importantly, by enabling students to work together, produce studies of world class standard. Besides, through this conference we hope that the participating students will be able to develop networks of friendship and research which can be used to share experience and resources for the benefits of all.”
Izmir University of Economics Student Council President Begüm Şele stated her happiness in hosting the fourth of the conference and said, “Hosting an international conference shows how committed Izmir University of Economics is for the development of the students.”
Sessions started after the opening speeches. Suresh Naisu from USA California Berkley University presented his research about the impacts of political coups and top-secret coup planning on asset prices. Naidu said, “We use declassified CIA documents and daily stock price data to estimate the effect of private events on asset prices of partially nationalized US companies that stood to benefit from US backed coups. We find that stock markets react to actions classified as top-secret. Private events, which raise the likelihood of a coup, affect a continued rise in returns on affected assets. After incorporating the impact of private information events occurring before the coup, stock price reactions to coups are substantial. We witnessed that this event took place clearly in Iran.”
Pınar Çakıroğlu from Middle East Technical University made a presentation entitled “South Eastern Anatolia Project and the Traditional Structure in the Region”. Çakıroğlu said, “The main problem in South Eastern Region is handling the problem only in economic dimension. However, ways of alternative development followed in the world can be looked for by evoking the knowledge in the region.” In his presentation Ahmet Aşarkaya from Izmir University of Economics researched why the rate of women participating in the workforce is low in Turkey. He stated, “I realized the gap about this subject in literature. In the countries I researched, I found out that religious factors prevented the women in participating in the workforce. Besides, I reached to a conclusion that the women who have higher education partake more in the workforce and there are more female workers in places where there are large number of male workers.”
The conference continued with sessions like “Regional Conflicts”, “Promotions and Enterprises”, “Culture and Gender”. Best papers are awarded in the conference. Giacomo De Luca from Belgium Namur University, Oğuz Barlas from METU, Büke Oşafoğlu from Izmir University of Economics are awarded with “Scientific Accomplishment Award”.
