IUE PROVIDES PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY SERVICE TO ITS STUDENTS
Students showed great interest in the Student Development and Counseling Center that is established at Izmir University of Economics to give professional psychological support to the students. Nilgün Kutlay, the clinical psychologist in the Center gave some information about the works done. Kutlay makes personal discussions with the students at first. She said, “We first try to understand together the person’s point of view about the problem. Later, we evaluate the mistakes s/he makes while commenting on the problem through that point of view and we use specific systematic and structured methods for the solution.”
Kutlay pointed out that university is a place where a person has more responsibility about his/her own behaviors and their consequences, and they are treated as “adults” in this new environment, and said, “Since university life puts individuality to the foreground the students sometimes have difficulties in adapting this new environment and conditions. Besides, they have doubts about their future and career, and there are some students that come to our center with complaints like insomnia, depression, lack of self confidence, etc.”
The psychologist stated that the students come to the center with problems like having difficulties in having close friends and consequently feeling lonely.
