IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS, RANKED IN 5th PLACE ON INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP CULTURE IN TURKEY
Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology announced the most innovative and entrepreneur 50 universities in Turkey. Izmir University of Economics, which is the only foundation university from Aegean Region in the index, ranked in 5th place with 8.6 points in terms of “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Culture”.
Ekrem Demirtaş, Chairman of the Executive Board of Izmir Chamber of Commerce and President of the Board of Trustees of IUE, stated that Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology announced “Entrepreneur and Innovative University Index 2012”. Demirtaş pointed out that the most innovative and entrepreneur 50 universities out of 168 universities in Turkey were ranked and there were only 15 foundation universities were on the list. He said, “Our University came in 34th place according to the ranking based on scientific and technological research competency, intellectual property pools, entrepreneurship and innovation culture, and economic contribution and commercialization traits of the universities. We are the only foundation university on the list from Izmir and Aegean Region.”
RANKED IN 5TH PLACE IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP CULTURE
Demirtaş indicated that Izmir University of Economics, with a score of 8.6, left many of the important and recognized universities in Turkey behind in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship culture. He said, “We are very proud that our young university, at the end of 11 years since its establishment, took its place among the many recognized universities of Turkey, and surpassed many of them.” He said being on that list for IUE, where 42 out of 168 universities were eliminated from, 126 universities competed for, and only 15 foundation universities made it, was not a coincidence. Demirtaş said:
“We did not establish this university to offer a classical education and to train regular graduates. At the start off our establishment we declared that we were going to train the most needed entrepreneurs of this country. We were going to accomplish this with a strategy based on innovation, and this very index proves our accomplishment. Many years of labour and hard work is officially recorded with this ranking.
Without a doubt, the Embriyonix unit, which accomplished many significant projects, and allowed students to start their businesses while they are still at school, has a great contribution to this success. Embriyonix is a centre that primarily develops technology and design projects, and accelerates the processes of starting businesses and finding investors. When the entrepreneur students and graduates come to Embriyonix with their projects, they receive support on various fields as mentoring and expert opinion, business development, office space, meeting with businessmen, meeting with investors, and education, etc. Many projects with budgets of millions of dollars have been developed at Embriyonix.
We now established Izmir Bilimpark under the leadership of the University. The corporate establishment is completed, the ground-breaking ceremony will be held this year, and the entrepreneurs and the researchers will start working at Izmir Bilimpark at the beginning of next year. Upon the launching of Izmir Bilimpark, the University will be among the first 10 on the list. The flag of innovation and entrepreneurship in Izmir, Aegean Region, and in Turkey will continue to wave at Izmir University of Economics. ”
