DEMIRTAS ADDRESSED THE YOUTH
The President of the Board of Trustees, Ekrem Demirtaş, advised the youth to go after their dreams and to be patient and entrepreneurs in his “First Lecture” at the 11th Academic Year Opening Ceremony of University of Economics.

One of 12 Universities in Europe
Rector Prof. Dr. Sezgin emphasized in his opening speech that, with an increasing number of universities in Turkiye recently, Izmir University of Economics has become prominent with its qualified training. He said that IUE became entitled to receive the certificate of quality that is only given to 12 universities in Europe by European Commission. Prof. Dr. Sezgin stated, “It is such an honour to have a phenomenal success as a pilot university in Bologna Process in Turkiye. Only Ege University and Anatolian University have received this certificate along with us. We crowned our quality of education with ECTS Label in addition to Diploma Supplement Label”.
Don’ Be Afraid To Dream
After Prof. Dr. Atilla Sezgin’s speech, President Demirtaş advised the students to dream and reminded that dreams are the starters of success during his “First Lecture”. Demirtaş said that technology, data processing, media and free information opens up one’s horizon and continued to say, “We live in a world where my dreams and utopias became reality. To dream means to see the nonexistent sometimes, so don’t be afraid to dream”.
Target 2020 Expo
Demirtaş noted that they achieved some of the goals they dreamed about İzmir and some of them haven’t still materialized in 20 years. He said, “One of the issues we went after for 20 years is EXPO candidacy. We pursued it since 1992. We lost the candidacy for 2000 and also for 2015. Our target now is for 2020. What I’m trying to say is that you can only achieve little success in short term. Dream about it. Even if you can’t realize your dreams, keep on working to make it happen. Maybe you won’t get to see it but you will set a goal for the future”.
Izmir University of Economics is an Ancestral Heritage
President Demirtaş recalled that the establisment of Izmir University of Economics started with a dream. He said, “We established it in 2001. It wasn’t easy. Some people rejected the idea. Some stil do. But we became a very big family with 6500 students, 600 faculty members, almost 200 personnel. We are also happy to achieve one of Great Atatürk’s dreams, instructions. In 1923, at the Economic Congress in Izmir, Atatürk asked the merchants to open up schools that provided economic training. Atatürk dreamed about the Republic and he realized his dream and he bestowed us with it. Now we carried his request through. Our university is an inheritance from our ancestor”.
Rector Prof. Dr. Atilla Sezgin awarded Asst. Prof. Dr. Özgür Özpeynirci with a Plaque on His “Best Doctoral Dissertation Award” in MCDM Doctoral Dissertation Competition after President Demirtaş’s first lecture. The ceremony ended with the performance of “Eternal Zeibek” by IUE students.
