Prof. Dr. Tevfik Balcıoğlu made the opening speech of the conference and stated that İzmir could come to the forefront as a design city and said, “I will advertise our faculty here. The opening ceremony of the extraordinary building of Faculty of Fine Arts and Design will take place on October 20, 2010 at 20:10. We are very proud to host a world-famous architect Takaharu Tezuka before this opening. The successful people that we host will help İzmir come to the forefront as a design city."
Takaharu Tezuka told about the extraordinary designs he made accompanied by the photographs and music in the speech entitled “Nostalgic Future” and said, “The design that made me famous among the architects is “Roofless House”. While working with the people, we do not ask people what kind of a house they would like. We ask: What is your lifestyle? What do you like to do at the weekends? This house is designed after such a question. The members of the family told us that they would like to have a breakfast on the roof; they would like to live on the roof. We created a living space on the roof with windows opened up the roof. Many architecture magazines in the world made news about this house. We never had to explain the concept of the house, because it was obvious”.
The famous architect Takaharu Tezuka, known with his people oriented extraordinary architecture works, underlined that a single house could change the society and stated that the biggest aim of his designs was to make people happy. Tezuka said, “Architecture is not possible without people and people’s existence is not possible without architecture. We need to ask: ‘How can we combine architecture with the people’. We need to know what happiness is. We need to know what family is. So we can design houses that the families can live happily in them. We need to know how a beautiful Turkish tea can be drunk on the street. So we can design a beautiful teahouse. I do not talk about the physical existence of architecture. Architecture is not a thing, it is an event.”
Tezuka also said that he put the demands of the customers on the foreground but there were things that could not be done and stated that he ended two of his jobs for that reason this year. At the end of his speech, Tezuka emphasized that one had to be local before, in order to be universal.
