THE 95-YEAR-OLD WEDDING DRESS REVIVED

The 95-year-old wedding dress of Mehriye Yel Dinç, who came to Pancar Village in Torbalı from Thessaly, Greece in 1924 exchange, revived at İzmir University of Economics. The granddaughter of Mehriye Yel Dinç, retired teacher Mehriye Başyiğit donated the wedding dress that was in her chest for 35 years to İzmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Fashion Design.
The ancient wedding dress decorated with handicrafts on ping silk fabric will be protected in the exhibition archive of the Department of Fashion Design. The granddaughter Mehriye Başyiğit kept the wedding dress of Mehriye Dinç, who was married in 19 years old and passed away while giving birth to her fourth child. She said, “My mother gave this very precious wedding dress of my grandmother to me, since I carried her name. My grandmother passed away when she was 28, so I could not have the chance to meet her. But they named me after my grandmother. I have been keeping this dress for years in special fabrics not to cause it wear off. I took out it from the chest for the first time in 35 years.”
Başyiğit stated that she followed the fashion shows and exhibitions organized by İzmir University of Economics Department of Fashion Design via the press and she said that she had donated the dress since she believed that it would be kept better and had a role in the education of the students. Başyiğit said, "I and my husband are retired teachers. Education is very important for us. This wedding dress, which has a big importance for us, will be an important material for the young people. We were able to keep it for 95 years. It is being damaged since it is silk. I believe that it will be looked after better in the Department of Fashion Design.”
Head of Department of Fashion Design, Asst. Prof. Şölen Kipöz took the wedding dress from Mehriye Başyiğit and thanked by saying that they were very happy to have this precious dress which had an important place in the history of design.
