AWARDS FOR INNOVATIVE IDEAS

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) has been crowned with complete success of its future, entrepreneurial engineers. Students of IUE Faculty of Engineering collected awards at the “6^th Young Minds, New Ideas Project Market and Graduation Projects Joint Exhibition”. IUE Engineers collected 5 out of 7 awards in different categories at the contest in which one thousand students participated with 232 projects.

Tekin Evrim Özmermer, Uğur Çetmili, Ahmet Atatoprak, and Selin Önal, students of IUE Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, came in first place with their “Topographer” titled project led by Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, IUE Vice Rector, at the contest held by the Informatics Association of Turkey, Izmir Branch with the contribution of the Association of Computer Engineers. Maksim Sorokin and Mete Berk Ergun, students of IUE Department of Computer Engineering, received the most visitor votes for their “Applied Deep Learning”’ titled project led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Senem Kumova Metin, and received a special award (First in Hearts award).   

In the Category of Industry, Beste Kesici, Didem Çiftçi, and Mert Kalaycı, students of IUE Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, came in second place with their “Smart Garden” titled project led by Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, IUE Vice Rector. IUE Department of Software Engineering students Emre Özdemir and Yiğit Can Dündar came in third place in the Category of Games, Entertainment, and Education with their “Teos Game Project” titled Project led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Gazihan Alankuş. Duygu Keşkek and Yasin Sinan Kayacan, students of IUE Department of Software Engineering, came in third place in the Category of Social Media and Communication with their “Yoloo” titled project led by Prof. Dr. Emrullah Turhan Tunalı.

‘Good news for the construction industry’

Tekin Evrim Özmermer, student of IUE Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, who came in first place with the “Topographer” titled project in the category of Academic Informatics, gave information about their project and he said that they were able to do the topographical survey of the lands quickly and at a high quality with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles (commonly known as drones) by reaching out to rugged terrains the topographical engineers fail to reach. Özmermer, who indicated that their project would allow increasing the number of potential construction sites, said “The system receives the altitude and location data coming from altimeter and GPS systems during its flight. It takes dual shoots by using stereoscopic camera at the same time and uses them to measure the distance to the land under the drone. It maps with the location data coming from the GPS sensor. This way maps are being prepared rapidly, and it helps decrease the duration and cost of the constructions”.
