TRANSLATION AND TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATED’
Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Department of English Translation and Interpreting, celebrated September 30th International Translation Day and the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the department with “Translation and Technology Panel”. Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Oktar, Head of IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting, delivered the opening speech of the event that took place at IUE Conference Hall where representatives of Izmir Translation Students Platform also expressed their opinions.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şahin, Lecturer at IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting, Halil İbrahim Balkul from Sakarya University, Çağdaş Acar, Business Development Manager from Dragoman LTD, Bekir Diri, Web Translation Manager from Dragoman LTD, and Selçuk Özcan, Translation/Quality Automation Manager from Dragoman LTD, attended the “Translation and Technology Panel”.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şahin stated that technology was the most frequently used tool in overcoming language barriers. He said, “Even though the last twenty years is not a long period in the history translation studies, technological developments caused major changes in this field. Translators, who are considered to be the feature players and pioneers of intercultural communication, need to use technology most efficiently and consciously. This necessity is highly important in terms of increasing the quality and performance of translation and protecting the continuity of the translator.”
Halil İbrahim Balkul, on the other hand, pointed that the present economic, military, and political relations accelerated the international communication as they have never before in history, and he said translation Technologies developed in order to meet the demands, were an outcome of translation markets rather than invention of the academia. Çağdaş Acar from Dragoman LTD, reminded that right after the establishment of Google Docs in 2006, translation Technologies, starting from 2010 the latest, started to transform into scan translation technology. Dragoman LTD Web Translation Manager Bekir Diri reported that the web sites took the first steps in becoming local in foreign cultures with web globalization. Selçuk Özcan stated that translation automation had a structure that changed the quality and performance.
