IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS FURNITURES AT COLOGNE!

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) will be representing Turkey at the International Furnishing Show (IMM Cologne 2014) that will be held at Cologne, Germany. IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Departments of Industrial Design, and Interior Architecture and Environmental Design will represent the country with 17 pieces of furniture they designed at the fair that will be held on January 13 – 19. The furniture projects designed by students will be displayed at the fair, where only IUE from Turkey has been invited, as part of their Furniture Design course co-conducted by Departments of Industrial Design, and Interior Architecture and Environmental Design.
The project team of Lecturers Ertan Demirkan, Cengiz Ultav, Zeynep Edes, Neptün Öziş, and Research Assistants Seren Borvalı and Özgür Deniz Çetin of Furniture Design Course, chose “KEYWORDS F.U.N” as a theme this year for students. Students designed 17 pieces of furniture based on this theme. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, and IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu had a chance to visit and try out the furniture at the workshop before they were shipped to the fair.
‘IUE, at champions’ league in furniture design!’
Assist. Prof. Dr. Can Özcan, Head of IUE Department of Industrial Design, pointed out that the University was at champions’ league when it came to furniture design, and he said, “Izmir University of Economics is a strategic address for furniture sector. Our faculty entered the fair in Milan in its 5th year. And now, in our 10th year, we are going to Cologne. We will have a chance to display where we are at in furniture design in the international arena with the designs of our students.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deniz Hasırcı, Head of IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, also stated that collaboration of the two departments produced different and efficient furniture, and that was a pride well deserved by the University.
Lecturer Ertan Demirkan, Project Coordinator of Furniture Design Course, stated that total of 73 students from both departments teamed up as pairs to work on the project. Demirkan said that the students designed their furniture to be displayed at Cologne by using the key words such as function, user, and nature. He said that Izmir University of Economics was going to display the Turkish design power at a 40 square meter stand at the fair along with countries as Germany, Austria, Finland, and Korea which have a say in the sector.
