"DEMOCRATIC DESIGN" WITH PROF. HENRY SANOFF

Izmir University of Economics-Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design welcomed a world renowned architect Prof. Dr. Henry Sanoff.
Prof. Dr. Sanoff from North Carolina State University, who visited Izmir for the first time for a series of seminars, workshops and exhibitions, is one of the founders and first president of EDRA (Environmental Design Research Association). Sanoff is considered as one of the most well-known architects and researcher on design, social architecture, democratic design, and user oriented design.
Asst. Prof. Dr Deniz Hasırcı, Head of Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, lecturers Asst. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Tuna Ultav, Didem Kan Kılıç, and research assistant İpek Kaştaş worked on the organization with the help of research assistants Hande Atmaca, Seren Borvalı, Oylum Dikmen and Selin Gülden, and students Halil Doğan, Can Başdoğan, Gökhan Keskin and Seray Özbiçer.
Prof. Dr. Sanoff, second quest speaker in the “Talking Interiors” series, attracted a great attention with his presentation on democratic design. Prof. Dr. Henry Sanoff presented project examples about participatory design approach and user centred design in the seminar in which many participants came from many universities in and out of Izmir. Prof. Sanoff, who conducted workshops with second, third and fourth year students, visited Private TAKEV School as part of these workshops. He also arranged a workshop on school design. The 3-day workshops came to an end with the exhibition of students’ projects.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Hasırcı, Head of Department, stated that she had the chance to work with Prof. Sanoff during her Fulbright scholarship period. She said, “It is a pleasure to have Prof. Dr. Sanoff at our school. I was lucky to have worked with him before. We wanted our students to know him and learn about his experiences. We are trying to implement the participation approach in the operation of the department. It is very important to feel that we have the right to speak and that our voices are heard in order to adapt to our current environment. As designers, we should not forget the importance of that issue.”
Prof. Sanoff, who had also the opportunity to go sightseeing in Izmir, thanked Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Hasirci and the academic staff taking part in the organization of all the activities, and stated that the program was very intense but very effective and efficient.
