REPRIMAND TO FRANCE BY IUE SENATE
Izmir University of Economics Senate has reprimanded French Parliament for accepting a law proposal which counts declining supposed Armenian genocide claims as a crime.
The Senate, which came together under the chairmanship of Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu, has decided to give a reprimand to French Parliament for accepting the law.
The IUE Senate has expressed their sadness, astonishment and disappointment in the letter of reprimand. The Senate has expressed the following opinions regarding the new law;
“The fact that, the law proposal, which counts declining supposed Armenian genocide claims referring to 1915 events as a crime, has created deep sadness, astonishment and a big disappointment for us as it has for each citizen of our country.
It is very evident that, with this decision, the French Parliament has become the instrument of petty political interests, and disregarded freedom of thought and speech which are essentials of human rights.
This Parliament cannot be and should not be the parliament of a nation that raised very important thinkers of Age of Enlightenment such as Jean Jacques Rousseau, Montesquieu, and Diderot; that caused the end of an age and beginning of another age with its 1789 revolution.
Therefore, we, as Izmir University of Economics Senate, respectfully announce to public about the decision to reprimand the French Parliament, which attempts to pass judgment about history with such a primitive law, and ruins universal values of law.”
