Interesting ads such as, teeth for sale, mouthwash ad, bathing cubicle and circus ads take place in the exhibition.
Seçim has chosen to study advertising in Ottoman and has researched about it at National Library because of his personal interest while he was getting his master’s degree at University of Ankara. He stated that the advertising started in Ottoman with the influence of foreigners, and continued to say, “Ottomans perceived advertisement as reprehensible for a long time. Boasting was forbidden by religion. Therefore, not only publishing advertisements in the newspapers but even the servants that spread the Sultan’s commands weren’t welcomed. What could be considered as first advertisement is an ointment ad for athlete’s foot. Ads on different subjects such as mouthwash, teeth for sale and circus ads follow after this.”
“Advertising in Ottoman” exhibition will be on display until October 10 at Izmir University of Economics Lounge.
