International Translation Day Celebration
Department of Translation and Interpretation, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) celebrated September 30th International Translation Day with a seminar on “Sign Language Interpreting.” Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, addressed the importance of translation in various languages and fields at the event that took place at IUE Conference Hall.
In her speech, Prof. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner, Head of Department of Translation and Interpretation, said, “International Translation Day is being celebrated since 1953. Thanks to this day, the importance of translation and translators is increasing each passing day. We will continue to celebrate this important day under a different theme each year.”
Sign Language Interpreter Okan Kurt of Izmir Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Policies delivered a seminar in which he shared his knowledge and experience in “Sign Language Interpreting”.
The ceremony continued with the reading of the declarations made by International Federation of Translators (FIT), Literary Translators Union (ÇEVBİR) and Directorate for Translation Coordination of Directorate for EU Affairs. The declaration by the Directorate for Translation Coordination of Directorate for EU Affairs is as follows:
“Translation, which is a building stone of international communication and enables nations to understand each other by removing the language obstacle is very essential in terms of international politics, trade, economy, and technology. The translation profession, which aims to connect the entire world, transfer knowledge, emotions, and ideas from nations to nations, cannot be overlooked.”
