Izmir University of Economics Law Students Rank Second in Türkiye
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Law students Berin Ceylin Çorak, Deren Yalçın and Azra Özge Özgün came second in the “Comparena Competition Law Contest” organized by the Lawment Association. Held in the format of a practical hearing simulation, the competition required young lawyers to prepare written petitions for a process related to the Competition Board. Their oral defenses also impressed the jury.
Standing out with their knowledge, strong public speaking skills and different perspectives, the IUE team was delighted to win an award in the competition, which featured 17 teams from various universities across Türkiye.
“IT SHOWS THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION”
Prof. Dr. Sevilay Uzunallı, Dean of the IUE Faculty of Law, said they were proud of the students: “The achievement of our students in a specialized field such as competition law clearly demonstrates the quality of education provided at our faculty and the determination of our students. The steady increase in the success our students have achieved on national and international platforms in recent years is a strong indicator of our faculty’s academic approach and educational philosophy.
The fact that our students stand out not only with theoretical knowledge, but also with analytical thinking, legal argumentation and oral defense skills, is a concrete reflection of our contemporary legal education approach, which we strengthen through clinical legal practices. I sincerely believe that these achievements will continue to increase,” she said.
“IT CONSISTED OF TWO STAGES”
Team leader Berin Ceylin Çorak, who evaluated the competition process, stated that the organization consisted of two stages: “The competition proceeded based on a scenario concerning the Competition Board. First, in line with the case text given to us, we prepared an investigation report on behalf of the Board. Then, using the evidence in the same text, we wrote a defense petition addressed to the Competition Board.
Following these stages, the two teams with the highest scores, as determined by the jury, advanced to the oral stage, namely the final. The final stage was held in a debate format. We answered the questions posed by the jury members, and we also directed questions to the opposing side. At the end of this entire process, we came second based on the scoring,” she said.
“WE GAINED EXPERIENCE”
Çorak stated that they aimed to achieve a ranking when they entered the competition and worked very hard for it: “I can say that this success is a great source of pride and happiness for us. Thanks to the competition, we both gained significant experience and built a strong communication network. All the jury members were experts in their fields. This process gave us new perspectives in terms of our career plans,” she said.
