‘Double Cup’ Joy
The sailing and volleyball teams of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) crowned their season-long success with a “double cup” victory. The women’s volleyball team won the championship by finishing first without losing a single match in the Ministry of Youth and Sports UNI CUP competitions, held for the first time in Izmir. The 8-member sailing team also secured trophies in both the ‘Support C’ and ‘Overall Support’ categories at the Jimmy Key Universail, outperforming all their rivals in every race they entered. Emphasizing that they support the all-round development of students as a university, IUE Sports Coordinator Murat Palalı said, “These achievements once again demonstrate the importance of discipline, team spirit, and determination. We sincerely congratulate our students and are proud of them.”
The 15th Jimmy Key Universail Sailing Races, held this year at Urla Iskele, took place with the participation of 31 teams. IUE students, who have won trophies at Jimmy Key for the past two years, continued their dominance this year, extending their winning streak to three years. Meanwhile, the IUE Women’s Volleyball Team claimed the championship title at the GSB UNI Cup, also held for the first time in Izmir, without conceding a single set to their opponents. In addition, IUE students finished second in orienteering, while the Hado team completed the tournament in third place. In chess, Arda Baran Gülhan placed third in the men’s category; in the women’s category, Bengisu Özyavuz came second and Ceyda Ece Han third. In the individual E-Sports FC-26 category, Berk Çilli secured second place, while Yağız Tolunay finished third.
“WE ARE SPREADING SPORTS ACROSS THE CAMPUS”
Pointing out that the University hosted the chess, e-sports, and orienteering competitions within the UNI Cup, IUE Sports Coordinator Murat Palalı noted that the positive impact of sports on campus continues to grow. Palalı said, “For us, sports are not only about the trophies won. Sports are also one of the strongest components of our students’ development journey. Through sports, young people gain lifelong skills such as leadership, taking responsibility, and achieving together. This helps them become more well-equipped individuals both academically and personally. As Izmir University of Economics, we place great importance on supporting the multidimensional development of our students and take pride in the achievements they attain on national and international platforms.”
