Press Release and Public Statement
In line with notifications received by our University on January 4, 2026, it was determined that portrait photographs and student identification numbers belonging to our students and alumni were unlawfully obtained and published in a digital environment.
Following this determination, administrative, legal, and technical investigation processes were immediately initiated through a commission established within our University.
In addition, our University’s information technology infrastructure was comprehensively examined in cooperation with an organization specializing in cybersecurity.
It is assessed that the data leak is associated with the former Student Information System, which was decommissioned at the end of 2024, and that the unlawfully published information is limited to low-resolution portrait photographs and student identification numbers.
There is absolutely no data breach, security vulnerability, or unauthorized access in the Student Information System currently in active use at our University.
Acting simultaneously and in coordination with relevant public institutions and competent authorities, a criminal complaint was filed with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and an application was submitted to the İzmir 5th Criminal Peace Judgeship requesting the blocking of access to the relevant website.
All information and findings obtained by our University have been shared with the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and the İzmir Provincial Police Department, Cybercrime Division.
Within the scope of the investigation initiated by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, simultaneous operations were conducted in the provinces of Sakarya and Antalya on January 7, 2026, and three suspects were taken into custody. The judicial process is being pursued with due diligence by the competent authorities.
In accordance with all applicable legislation—primarily Law No. 6698 on the Protection of Personal Data—our University regards the protection of the personal data of its students, alumni, and all members as a top institutional priority, and continues to take all necessary measures with determination.
The objectification of our students and alumni in a manner that violates human dignity constitutes an attack on the fundamental values of our University. İzmir University of Economics does not accept any approach that targets, discredits, or objectifies women, and firmly enforces a zero-tolerance policy against such conduct.
With a quarter-century of institutional history, 12,000 students, and 30,000 alumni, İzmir University of Economics is among the most preferred universities in Türkiye. This cyberattack against our University has not undermined our confidence in the future; on the contrary, it has further strengthened our sense of responsibility.
We are grateful for the solidarity and support shown by our students, alumni, academic staff, and administrative personnel throughout this process.
We extend our sincere thanks to İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor Mr. Ali Yeldan, İzmir Provincial Police Chief Mr. Celal Sel, all judicial authorities, and the police force for their contributions in ensuring that the process progressed swiftly and effectively.
We will continue to fully protect and pursue the rights of our students and alumni.
Respectfully submitted to the public.
