DELICIOUS COOKIES BAKED BY TINY HANDS
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Culinary Arts and Management visited Izmir Türk Koleji (ITK) Kindergarten and baked delicious cookies with tiny chefs. IUE Chefs baked cookies and cakes with small children in order to contribute to their cognitive and motor skills.
The tiny chefs took pride in preparing their own desserts at the event coordinated by Semen Öner, Trainer Chef of IUE Department of Culinary Arts and Management. Trainer Chef Öner reported that the children were very interested in the whole process. Öner said, “We wanted to contribute to their cognitive and motor skills. One of our themes was change. We showed them how baking ingredients such as sugar, flour, etc. were mixed together and took a new form. We let them roll the dough and shape them into cookies. They baked their own cookies”.
Chef Öner, who stated that they also wanted to promote culinary arts, said, “Our students get an opportunity to practice what they learn at different environments. They will be working at restaurants in the future but being able to transfer their skills to the others, is significant I believe”.
ITK Kindergartens Director Burçin Bozok stated that baking changing-transformation activity played an important role in the development of taste, touch, smell, and hearing senses of children. “This activity, along with supporting the motor development of children, also contributes them to become individuals with reasoning skills and strong aesthetic perception who can take part in teamwork,” said Bozok.
