KITCHENS WILL GET ‘SMART’

Questions such as ‘Did I leave the burner on, my child wants to cook at home, how I can support him/her via video when I am not home, there is someone at the door, wondering who came, etc.’ will all be answered thanks to a ‘KitchConn’ project developed by IUE students. Kitchens are getting smarter with software and hardware based project. Spending time in kitchen will be more comfortable, safe, and cost efficient.
Tolga Varol, senior at IUE Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mert Köse, senior at Department of Software Engineering, and Selen Öztürk and Berkay Şenol, seniors at Department of Computer Engineering, will be able to control kitchenware and external factors without having to make fundamental changes.   
Student Tolga Varol stated that they aimed to make kitchen a safer place with their ‘KitchConn’ titled project co-developed with IUE Embryonix Technology Transfer Office. He said, “We wanted to let people spend more comfortable time in the kitchen and save time. We will control kitchenware trough software and hardware without having to make structural changes in the kitchen.”
‘Smart-Not Magical-Kitchens’
Varol reported that they would be monitoring the kitchen via camera by using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection, and keep excessive electric usage and gas leakage under control. Varol said that information such as the kitchen being unaired or outside temperature will be shared with the user. He stated the following:
“Kitchen is one of the rooms we spent time the most. You are always occupied doing something there. Therefore, we will try to find solutions for things you might be in need of or concerns that could come up there. If you are busy cooking and there is someone at the door you will be able to find out who the person is via our system and answer the door that way. Again, our system will let you make all the phone calls in the kitchen, or follow the recipes. If a child is alone at home and wants to cook something, parents will be able to monitor the child via video call and give instructions, etc.”
