A New Model in Higher Education: EKOMOD
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) has developed a web-based academic management platform called ‘EKOMOD’, introducing a new digital model that sets an example for higher education in Türkiye. Developed by IUE academic, EKOMOD has been registered, commercialized, and licensed to Marsala Yazılım A.Ş. By analyzing student data on a course and exam basis, presenting performance results, and automatically generating assessment and evaluation reports, EKOMOD will enable universities to manage their quality and accreditation processes in a more effective, systematic, and traceable manner. Now transformed into a commercial product, EKOMOD will be made available to universities both nationally and internationally.
The EKOMOD application, designed to transform assessment, evaluation, and accreditation processes in higher education, was developed following approximately one year of work by Prof. Dr. Yaşar Güneri Şahin, Dean of IUE Faculty of Engineering, and Prof. Dr. Fehmi Görkem Üçtuğ, Faculty Member at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The licensing agreement for EKOMOD was signed at a campus ceremony by Rector of IUE, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu and Musa Can Minaz, Chairman of the Board at Marsala Yazılım A.Ş. The ceremony was also attended by IUE Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Efe Biresselioğlu and executives from the IUE Project Development and Technology Transfer Office.
“IT WILL STRENGTHEN EDUCATIONAL QUALITY”
Emphasizing that the key to sustaining quality in higher education lies in tracking educational processes through accurate data and leveraging the results for continuous improvement, Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said, “EKOMOD is an innovative system that allows us to see in detail to what extent students achieve specific learning outcomes through courses and exams. In this respect, it offers vital decision-making support to the academics, department heads, and program directors. Furthermore, it creates a holistic structure across assessment-evaluation, quality assurance, and accreditation processes.
Having such an important project developed at our University registered and commercialized is a great source of pride for us. The partnership we have built with Marsala Yazılım is a prime example of university-industry integration. We firmly believe EKOMOD will make significant contributions to strengthening a data-driven management culture in higher education and continuously raising educational standards.”
“WE AIM TO EXPAND ITS REACH ACROSS UNIVERSITIES”
Musa Can Minaz, Chairman of the Board at Marsala Yazılım A.Ş., said, “Universities are required to regularly collect, analyze, and report vast amounts of data throughout their assessment and accreditation processes. Managing these procedures through disparate methods, often manually, creates a heavy workload while making data tracking and comparison difficult. By streamlining these connections between courses, exams, learning outcomes, and program competencies onto a single digital platform, EKOMOD offers universities significant advantages in time savings, standardization, and institutional memory. As Marsala Yazılım, our goal is to bring this powerful academic model developed at IUE to many more higher education institutions in Türkiye and abroad as a user-friendly, reliable, and scalable application.”
