BRIDGE OF MATHEMATICS FROM IZMIR TO AMERICA
Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Science Dean and Department Head of Mathematics, was invited to be a guest lecturer at Illinois State University, USA.
Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, who attended the post graduation thesis jury and presented series of seminars at ISU-one of the most recognized universities in the States- on April 12-21, was welcomed by the students with great enthusiasm. He lectured the graduate students on the theory of order statistics, multivariate probability distributions, and copulas and he said that they planned to improve the partnership for student and lecturer exchange between the two universities.
Prof. Dr. George Seelinger, Department Head of Mathematics of ISU, who visited IUE in 2009 in order to attend Biomathematics Conference, showed great interest to the seminars presented by Prof. Dr. Bayramoğlu. Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu indicated that BIOMERGE Agreement was in effect between the Departments of Mathematics of the two universities, and he said, “ Prof. Dr. Seelinger has especially mentioned that IUE Department of Mathematics was very successful at education and researches. Prof. Dr. Olcay Akman lectured the Applied Mathematics and Statistics PH.D students and Applied Statistics graduate students on linear statistical models this year within framework of joint agreements and student and lecturer exchange.”
Prof. Dr. Bayramoğlu pointed out that they came to an agreement on dual diploma joint graduate programs between the two universities. He said, “Our Rector Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu recommended us to meet with Prof. Dr. Gregory B. Simpson, Dean of ISU College of Arts and Science. Prof. Dr. Seelinger, ISU Department Head of
Mathematics, and Prof. Dr. Olcay Akman, Biomathematics graduate programs coordinator, also attended the meeting. The universities came to an agreement to initiate dual diploma programs. There will be an agreement similar to SUNY dual diploma programs where both IUE and ISU will provide two years of education each. We initiated the official paperwork. It is pleasing to know our university is leading this program.”
