ARCHIPRIX GRAND PRIZE GOES TO GAYE
Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Architecture graduate (class of 2011) Gaye Bezircioğlu has won the grand prize for “Archiprix”, best graduation projects in architecture not only in Turkey but worldwide.
Gaye Bezircioğlu has developed a project about Kemeraltı and she’s designed it by tailoring the Kemeraltı image in her head. After her graduation, Bezircioğlu has started her graduate program in Design at Newcastle University. She’s done an extensive research on Kemeraltı while she was preparing her project.
Bezircioğlu has stated that she’s tried to develop a project by taking historical aspects of Kemeraltı into consideration that would meet the needs of the region and the craftsmen. She’s said, “This research, which is my graduation project in architecture, includes history of the region, location, function, and interviews with the local public. I’ve been able to identify the needs of the region and make a suggestion for the location as a result of this research. To design such a region as Kemeraltı, to chat with local craftsmen, to identify the needs have been the most entertaining part of the project. I’ve completed my project with great enthusiasm.”
Bezircioğlu has indicated that it was a pure coincidence to enter the competition, and she was surprised at the results. She’s said, “I’ve not entered a competition regarding architecture before. I’m not brave about competitions. One of my teachers insisted that I should enter this one. Clearly, I was surprised at the results. Even though I’ve had some knowledge about the projects of other universities, and even though there was a guest jury, we’ve been evaluated within our university generally. The competition committee has given us this opportunity. I can honestly say that it was an honour to receive this prize from such a precious jury. I would like to thank all my teachers who have taught me for four years.”
Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Head of Department of Architecture, Prof. Dr. Gülsüm Baydar has stressed that, “Our student achieving the grand prize is very important in this competition which is not only nationally but internationally recognized. I believe that Gaye, who’s currently studying for her graduate degree in England, is going to achieve even greater success in future. We are proud of her as University of Economics.”
