Tastes of Izmir turned into artwork and being displayed in Spain

Local tastes of Izmir are turned into art, and are being exhibited at the 8th WTA International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art in Madrid, Spain among the artworks from all over the world. 35 dishes and desserts unique to Izmir including “boyoz” (a type of Turkish pastry), “Izmir köfte” (meatballs), “artichoke”, “mastic flavored cookies”, “çöp şiş” (small pieces of grilled meat on wooden skewers), and “şevketi bostan” (blessed thistle with lamb) look so delicious among the artwork of artists from countries such as Japan, Korea, France, USA, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Argentina, Holland, Russia, England, Norway, Germany, and China.
Prof. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) created exact replica of 35 dishes and desserts from Izmir with textile art. The artwork will be exhibited in Madrid, Spain until November 3, 2019.
“WE USED TEXTILE MATERIALS”
Prof. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, who represented Izmir at the biennial, organized under the theme of the sustainable city, said that the artwork, they created with Assoc. Prof. Jovita Sakalauskaite based on the culinary culture of the city, attracted great attention at the biennial. Stating that their artwork has been selected by an international jury for the biennial, Prof. Adanır said, “There is a cultural diversity in our city. These cultures still exist and are being kept alive. These communities have lived together for centuries and made up the important part of today’s culinary culture. We prepared 35 dishes unique to different cultures in Izmir by using textile materials based on the theme of the sustainable city. Our artwork is greatly appreciated. I am very happy to be promoting our city and our culinary culture.”
