ICE CREAM, A MUST IN THE SUMMER

The experts emphasize that ice cream, which is one of the most consumed products in the hot days of summer, is a nutritious sweet however, when comes unpackaged, it might become a threat to human health. They state that ice-cream should be prepared based on health and hygiene rules, and warn that ice creams containing ice crystals might cause throat infection.
Funda İfakat Tengiz, Lecturer at Izmir University of Economics, Vocational School of Health Services, indicated that packaged products needed to be prepared based on cold chain regulations. She said, “Ice cream is a nutritious sweet we all enjoy eating. It contains more energy, minerals, and vitamins compared to milk. However, milk provides the best environment for microorganisms to reproduce. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to buy ice cream from trusted places. And once melted, ice cream should not be frozen again, it should be just discarded.”

Tengiz stated that salep, which gives thickness to ice cream, is flour made from the tubers of the orchid genus that contains glucomannan. Glucomannan is believed to increase appetite, mental functions, thirst quencher, and fights paralysis, said Tengiz. Tengiz, who emphasized that ice cream was also very rich in calcium, said “Products such as ice cream and frozen yoghurt are digested easily even by those who have lactose intolerance because they are digested slowly. Also, there are ice creams prepared with sweeteners for people who have diabetes. However, we recommend people who are allergic to cow milk and egg, children with diabetes, and children under the age of one to avoid eating ice cream.”
