The Era of ‘Digital Badges’
Aiming to equip its students with additional competencies in a wide range of fields-from artificial intelligence and software to health and sustainability-alongside their chosen areas of study, İzmir University of Economics (IUE) has introduced 1,100 students to “digital badges,” which serve as electronic certificates. Emphasising that university education should not be limited to earning a diploma, Dr. Donald Staub, Director of the IUE Micro-Credentials Office, said: “Through digital badges, we provide our students with verifiable skills, prepare them for the professions of the future and offer them new employment opportunities.”
İzmir University of Economics has taken another major step in digital transformation by becoming the first and only university in Türkiye to join the Digital Credentials Commons (DCC), a network that includes some of the world’s leading universities. As a member of the DCC, which includes such prestigious higher education institutions as MIT, Harvard, the University of Toronto and TU Delft, İzmir University of Economics has contributed to efforts aimed at developing global standards for the reliability, portability and international recognition of digital credentials.
THE FIRST UNIVERSITY TO ESTABLISH AN OFFICE
As the first university in Türkiye to establish a Micro-Credentials Office, IUE aims to further develop a new-generation approach to higher education in which learning becomes visible, verifiable and portable throughout life through open badges and digital credentials.
CEREMONY HELD FOR STUDENTS
İzmir University of Economics recently held an “Italian and French Proficiency Digital Badge Ceremony” for students from the Department of English Translation and Interpreting who successfully completed their second foreign-language education. Organised for the third time this year in collaboration with the Department of English Translation and Interpreting, the School of Foreign Languages and the IUE Micro-Credentials Office, the ceremony recognised students who had studied Italian or French for four years and successfully completed the relevant proficiency assessments. The students received digital badges certifying their competencies in translation and oral presentation. The ceremony was also attended by Prof. Dr. Neslihan Yetkiner, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; Başak Çiftçioğlu, Coordinator of the French Programme; and Buket Kasalı, Coordinator of the Italian Programme.
“EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR ADDITIONAL COMPETENCIES”
Dr. Donald Staub, Director of the IUE Micro-Credentials Office, stated that digital badges make the additional knowledge and skills students acquire throughout their degree programmes visible. “Today, employers no longer focus solely on which department a candidate has graduated from. They also value the ability to use digital technologies, foreign-language proficiency, artificial intelligence literacy, communication skills and a commitment to continuous learning. Digital badges enable students to demonstrate these competencies with concrete evidence, strengthen their CVs and stand out in recruitment processes,” said Dr. Staub.
“PART OF LIFELONG LEARNING”
Emphasising that micro-credentials play an important role in adapting to the expectations of the rapidly changing world of work, Dr. Staub said: “Digital badges are not an alternative to a diploma; they are powerful evidence of learning that complements it. Today, learning does not end with graduation. In a world shaped by artificial intelligence, automation and digital transformation, it is essential for individuals to continuously acquire new skills and document them in a reliable manner. Through digital badges that comply with international standards, our students can make their competencies visible on a global scale. As İzmir University of Economics, we will continue to develop our micro-credentials ecosystem and provide our students with new learning opportunities and employment advantages.”
WHAT IS A MICRO-CREDENTIAL?
A micro-credential is a verifiable qualification awarded upon the completion of short-term, focused learning that certifies the knowledge, skills or competencies a person has acquired in a specific field. Unlike traditional degree programmes, micro-credentials focus on a narrower and more specialised subject. Competencies acquired in fields such as sustainability, data analysis, artificial intelligence or communication are generally documented through digital badges and can be shared on CVs, in job applications or on professional platforms.
