Psychoactive Substance Use and Addiction in Literary Works

Izmir University of Economics, Department of English Translation and Interpretation, will host a seminar titled “Psychoactive Substance Use and Addiction in Literary Works” on Monday, December 1, 2025. The guest speaker, Expert Psychologist Dilek Aksoy from Ege University's Institute on Drug Abuse, Toxicology and Pharmaceutical Science will examine how psychoactive substance use is conveyed in literature from a phenomenological perspective. Using examples from the works of authors such as Baudelaire, Jack London, Bulgakov, and Walter Benjamin, she will provide a brief assessment of the reasons for using psychoactive substances, their effects, and the meanings attributed to these experiences.
