The 7th Annual Criminal Law Days Symposium Organized by the Faculty of Law at İzmir University of Economics: “Artificial Intelligence and Criminal Law”
The seventh edition of the Criminal Law Days symposium series, organized annually by the Faculty of Law at İzmir University of Economics, will be held this year under the theme of "Artificial Intelligence and Criminal Law." Aiming to address current developments in the field of criminal law, the symposium will explore the multifaceted impact of artificial intelligence technologies on criminal law.
The symposium will be held in two sessions.
The first session will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Veli Özer Özbek (İzmir University of Economics, Faculty of Law).
In this session, Prof. Dr. Armağan Ebru Bozkurt Yüksel (Dokuz Eylül University) will deliver a presentation titled “Governance of Artificial Intelligence,” examining how artificial intelligence can be managed within a legal framework.
Following this, Dr. Pınar Bacaksız (Dokuz Eylül University) will present on “Legal Regulation Efforts Concerning Artificial Intelligence,” offering an evaluation of existing and proposed normative frameworks.
Lastly, Research Assistant İlker Tepe (Dokuz Eylül University) will present on “Technology as a Trojan Horse in Modern Criminal Law: A Principled Discussion,” opening a debate on the fundamental legal issues arising from the use of technology in criminal law.
The session will conclude with a discussion segment that invites contributions from participants.
The second session will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Armağan Ebru Bozkurt Yüksel.
In this session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Candide Şentürk Akaner (İzmir University of Economics) will deliver a presentation titled “A Brief Evaluation of Artificial Intelligence from the Perspective of Criminal Liability,” addressing the role of artificial intelligence in determining criminal responsibility.
Attorney Resul Göksoy (İzmir Bar Association) will present on “Information Technology – Digital Evidence and Artificial Intelligence,” analyzing the influence of AI on processes involving digital evidence.
Dr. Arzu Aşcı (İzmir University of Economics) will offer a presentation titled “An Evaluation of the Relationship Between Artificial Intelligence and the Presumption of Innocence,” discussing the interaction between AI and one of the fundamental principles of criminal procedure.
Finally, Research Assistant Dr. Tansu Sayar Kanyış (İzmir University of Economics) will present on “The Use of Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Unmanned Aerial Vehicles from the Perspective of International Criminal Law,” focusing on the legal implications of AI use in warfare technologies under international criminal law.
The session will conclude with a Q&A and discussion segment.
This year’s symposium will offer legal professionals and academics a platform to discuss the effects of artificial intelligence technologies on criminal law from an interdisciplinary perspective. It is expected to contribute significantly to addressing the challenges that may arise in interpreting and applying criminal norms, as well as in shaping criminal policy.
