IUE, GETTING READY FOR URBAN TRANSFORMATION

Izmir University of Economics plans to contribute to Izmir by opening the Department of Civil Engineering that is much needed by the sector and business world due to urban transformation. The Department of Civil Engineering that will begin education at 2013-2014 academic year, will address the serious shortage in the civil engineering sector. The Department, which was approved by YOK (Higher Education Council), will have a quota of 60 students, including 5 full scholarships and 10 foreign students’ quota.
Ekrem Demirtaş, President of the Board of Trustees, reminded that based on the environment plans of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, there were a total of 9 thousand 525 hectare housing zones in central districts of Izmir, and the number of houses to be built was approximately 725 thousand. He said that the sector was in need of qualified, well-trained civil engineers.
President Demirtaş said, “400 thousand houses will be renewed in a 4 thousand 286 hectare zone through urban transformation. Also, 325 thousand houses will be built on the expanded housing zone of 3 thousand 607 hectare. The number of new houses to be built on urban transformation and expanded housing zones are 725 thousand. The Department of Civil Engineering within the body of Faculty of Engineering and Computer Sciences, will address the serious shortage in the sector.”
President Demirtaş, who reminded that 6 thousand 500 graduates of Izmir University of Economics entered the business life, and many of them established their own businesses successfully, said, “We will continue to educate and train highly qualified, well-trained, enterprising students that Izmir and Turkey is in need of. We will continue to lead the way in education with new departments by taking the demands of the sector into consideration. I recommend this department especially to students who are interested in civil engineering, and whose families are in the business of civil engineering. Also, children of Izmir Chamber of Commerce members will benefit from 15 % discount education.”
