Colombian Artist Highlights Ataturk’s Message of Peace in His Artwork
Colombian muralist Santiago Arboleda created a unique artwork at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) with the theme of ‘peace and biodiversity’. Arboleda amazed viewers with his use of color gradients and drawing skills, reflecting his art on a campus wall. Depicting the richness of Colombia, one of the leading countries in bird diversity, Arboleda incorporated the words of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, ‘Peace at home, peace in the world’, in his native language in the artwork’s lower left corner. During the week-long project, students studying Spanish at IUE assisted Arboleda.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on campus to celebrate the completion of the work. The event was attended by Julio Aníbal Riaño Velandia, the Colombian Ambassador to Ankara; Emre Kızılgüneşler, Honorary Consul of Costa Rica in Izmir and IUE Board of Trustees Member; Eli Alharal, Honorary Consul of Colombia; Kevin Ramirez, Colombia’s Cultural Attaché; Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu, IUE Rector; Mehmet Şenbağcı, International Relations Representative of the School of Foreign Languages and Spanish Instructor; as well as academics and students.
“ART UNITES NATIONS”
Expressing his happiness about being in Izmir, Santiago Arboleda said, “The biodiversity of my country’s birds symbolizes not only Colombia’s cultural and ethnic diversity but also Turkey’s. Each line, color, and shape brings to life an idea that unites us as nations and strengthens our sense of brotherhood. This is why I wanted to bring ‘a small piece’ of Colombia to Turkey. I believe art transcends borders and unites us as nations. Color is a symbol of peace and harmony and serves as a starting point for envisioning a better future together. I am grateful for the warm welcome and for showing me the most beautiful aspects of this place.”
“IT WILL STRENGTH TIES BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES”
Stating that this event, organized in the spirit of friendship, has a special meaning, Colombian Ambassador Julio Aníbal Riaño Velandia said, “There’s no better way to strengthen the closeness between Colombia and Turkey than through art and culture. Santiago Arboleda, a renowned artist and muralist from Colombia, leaves a timeless legacy in the heart of this prestigious university. His work depicts the infinite flight of the human spirit. This mural, adorned with birds, reminds us of the universal aspirations of freedom, beauty, and soaring towards broader horizons. Beyond wings and feathers, this mural whispers a profound message: even in the darkest times, hope always finds a way to soar, bringing comfort, peace, and serenity. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of this great nation, immortalized peace with his words: Peace at home, peace in the world. We thank Santiago for leaving a lasting connection here and for showcasing the richness of our wonderful Colombia, a land of beauty.”
“A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE”
Noting the contribution of students to the mural’s creation, IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu said, “I extend my gratitude to the esteemed artist Arboleda for this magnificent mural reflecting his homeland’s biodiversity. Santiago Arboleda created this artwork with the help of our students, offering them a unique experience. This mural highlights Colombia’s biodiversity and its commitment to preserving peace. Learning that Colombia ranks first in bird diversity, second in plant, amphibian, freshwater fish, and butterfly diversity, and third in reptile and palm species, has been a great pleasure. Colombia is a natural treasure for humanity. The mural’s theme is peace and biodiversity, symbolizing the brotherhood between the two countries. I thank the artist, the ambassador, and everyone involved in the project.”
