‘Mexican’ artist on campus

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) hosted Mexican photographer Santiago Garcia Galvan's special exhibition titled ‘El Tiempo De Alicia’ consisting of 19 works. The works of Galvan, who adapted the fairy tale ‘Alice in Wonderland’ to Havana, the capital of Cuba, and turned it into a photography exhibition, were appreciated by art enthusiasts and students.
The opening of the exhibition, organized in cooperation with the Embassy of Mexico and Izmir University of Economics, was attended by Ambassador of Mexico José Luis Martinez Hernandez, IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu, Honorary Consul of Mexico in Izmir Kemal Çolakoğlu, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Levent Eren, Children's University Research and Application Center Board Member Ayşe Özgener, School of Foreign Languages Director Asst. Prof. Dr. Donald Staub, International Relations Representative Mehmet Şenbağcı, academics, students and guests.
I FELT LIKE I WAS ON THE STREETS OF HAVANA
Stating that Izmir University of Economics attaches great importance to artistic activities, Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said, “I was very happy to meet the artist. I went to Havana about 20 years ago. I met beautiful people, beautiful places there; I listened to very special stories. While visiting the exhibition, I felt as if I was back on the streets of Havana. I would like to thank the artist for giving us all a wonderful historical journey.”
TURKEY AND MEXICO HAVE CLOSE RELATIONS
José Luis Martinez Hernandez, Ambassador of Mexico to Turkey, stated that he was happy to come together in such an important and meaningful event at Izmir University of Economics. Pointing out that Turkey and Mexico have established close relations in the fields of education and culture, Hernandez said that the exhibition is a good example in this respect. Hernandez added that they would like to continue their cooperation with IUE in the upcoming period.
