'Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation' department opened at IUE
Izmir University of Economics (IUE), which improves the quality of education in the field of health and offers opportunities to its students with the collaborations it develops, established the ‘Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation’ with yet another innovation in its 20th year of establishment. A total of 30 people will study in the department, which will start accepting students this year. All students in the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, which will provide education for 4 years within the Faculty of Health Sciences, will benefit from scholarships and discounts. 5 of the students in the department will study with a full scholarship, and 25 will study at a 50% discount. During their education period, students will perform their internship at IUE Medical Park Hospital, and in their senior year, they will have the opportunity to improve themself by working in different fields such as palliative care, oncology, and neurology as intern physiotherapists.
Stating that there are 8 physiotherapists for every 100 thousand people in our country, Asst. Prof. Dr. Şermin Tükel, Head of IUE Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, said that the need for the profession increases with the prolonged life expectancy. Asst. Prof. Dr. Tükel said, “With the Covid-19 outbreak, infectious diseases became a current issue. However, the health sector is also struggling with metabolic diseases such as cancer and diabetes. The biggest trigger of these diseases is inactivity. Because when the muscles remain inactive, the necessary enzymes for the body cannot be secreted. Considering that the elderly population has increased in recent years, the need for physiotherapists becomes clear.”
THEY CAN OPEN A WELLNESS CENTER
Asst. Prof. Dr. Tükel continued as follows: “Physiotherapists plan and implement appropriate physiotherapy and rehabilitation treatment programs for patients according to the diagnosis made by the physician. They improve the quality of life of patients, including those receiving home treatment. They also determine programs for the treatment of diseases such as age-related muscle disorders, injuries, and movement disorders. In addition, physiotherapists have the right to continue their activities in the field of health by establishing their own wellness center or exercise counseling center. They can also open a Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Branch Center together with physicians who are physical therapists. They can also open a Special Education and Rehabilitation Center that serves individuals with disabilities in need of rehabilitation. All these career opportunities are important advantages for young people who will choose our department.”
HIGH QUALITY ACADEMIC STAFF
Prof. Dr. Filiz Öğce, Dean of IUE Faculty of Health Sciences, stated that they have formed a high-quality academic staff and that they will give the best education to their students. Prof. Dr. Öğce said, “We established our new department by not standing idle by the need for physiotherapists and the interest of young people in this field. We have established a teaching staff consisting of experts in the field. Of course, as well as qualified education, it is also very important for young people to put the knowledge they have acquired into practice and to apply it in the hospital environment. Our students will perform their compulsory internship at IUE Medical Park Hospital during their education. They will gain experience by working in important units such as neurology, orthopedics and cardiology while working in the hospital during their senior internship.”
