Evidence-based information leads to reality
Students of Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) started the 2020-2021 Academic Year with the first lecture delivered by Faculty Member Prof. Metin Çakmakçı. 269 people attended the first lecture held on the university's Blackboard Learning System with the presentation of Res. Asst. Ecem Özgül from IUE Department of Nursing.
Stating that the majority of the new academic year will continue through distance education due to the pandemic, Prof. Filiz Öğce, Dean of IUE Faculty of Health Sciences, said, “As we begin the new academic year, we should keep our hopes alive instead of getting lost in negativity. By adapting to the new normal way of life, we must continue to seek out the better, seek out more.”
Our students should question every information
Following Prof. Öğce's speech, Prof. Çakmakçı, who delivered the first lecture titled "Scientific Thought Against Pseudoscience", said that accurate information can be obtained through evidence-based studies. Mentioning the importance of inquisitive thinking in all areas of life, Prof. Çakmakçı drew attention to accessing information based on scientific studies and scientific data. Noting that today it is easier to access information in line with the advancements in the technological field, but it becomes more difficult to access accurate and evidence-based information, Prof. Çakmakçı said, “Our students need to place emphasis on inquiring and accessing evidence-based information. We can we make progress in this way only. Otherwise we might get lost on the way.”
After the speeches, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Prof. Çakmakçı for his contributions by IUE Faculty of Health Sciences.
