Summer is here but social isolation and measures continue
Assoc. Prof. Barış Emre Dayanç, Lecturer at Faculty of Medicine, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), has been the guest of “Pandemic Academy”, held online by IUE Faculty of Communication as part of Campus Izmir Talks. The program, in which Assoc. Prof. Dayanç answered the questions of Prof. Ebru Uzunoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Communication, can be watched on IUE’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgWLj_CBG0g&t=2218s).
At the “How do we strengthen the immune system against coronavirus? ” themed online seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dayanç stated that diet, exercise and sleep are important for the normal functioning of the immune system. Emphasizing the importance of paying attention to the normal functioning of the immune system, Assoc. Prof. Dayanç said, “The normal functioning of the immune system does not show that it can always protect us from the virus, but this is our only guarantee to protect our lives. We must continue isolation and measures. The virus is transmitted from person to person through the mouth, nose and ocular mucous membranes. It reaches our lungs. It affects not only our lungs but our entire body.”
Reminding that there is no direct effective treatment system against the virus yet, Assoc. Prof. Dayanç said some of the people who carried the virus showed no signs of the disease. Emphasizing the importance of proper nutrition, sleep and exercise Assoc. Prof. Dayanç said excessive use of vitamins were not recommended. “There are studies that the deficiency of vitamin D directly affects the functioning of the immune system. But I'm not talking about taking it in very high doses. It should be taken under the supervision of a physician. Also the best source of vitamin D is the sun, but we need to be exposed to the sun directly at risk hours,” said Prof. Dayanç.
