THE EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY OF IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS WILL BE OPENED IN 2008
The works continue non-stop for the university that will be established in Germany with the cooperation of IUE and Goslar Municipality. IUE Board of Trustees President Ekrem Demirtaş stated that the letter of intent signed between two parties in October 5, 2006 in Izmir with the participation of Federal Republic of Germany, Minister of Environment Sigmar Gabriel, has been approved first by Goslar Town Council in December 9, 2006 and later by IUE Board of Trustees in February 5, 2007. Demirtaş said “After these decisions, Goslar Municipality gave the start for the investment of €30 million in their city.”
AN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION WILL BE OPENED
Demirtaş reminded that Goslar, in the Lower-Saxon State of Federal Republic is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a “Museum City”. He also stated that Goslar Municipality has allocated the historical palace building which was used as “The Palace of the Emperor” to the university. Demirtaş said that IUE Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Head of Department Dr. Markus Wilsing and Goslar Municipality specialists have prepared a draft for the campus area where palace of empire also takes place. He also said that Goslar Municipality will open an international competition for the campus area and construction plans of the university, by taking this draft prepared by Wilsing and Municipality specialists into consideration.
Demirtaş said “All investment expenditures will be covered by Goslar Municipality and the equipment and administration expenditures will be covered by Izmir University of Economics. Most importantly, the land where the investment will take place will be given by the Goslar Municipality free of cost. The €30 million investment cost will be covered by the university starting in the 11th year following the foundation of the university by installment in 15 years time. This is not the cost of the land, it is the cost of the investment that will be made to the building of the university, and however, the payment will be made after the university can stand on its own legs, so the university will be able to make its payments at ease.”
EVERY SECTION GIVES SUPPORT TO THE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION
Demirtaş stated that Federal Republic of Germany, Minister of Environment Sigmar Gabriel who follows the foundation of the university from the very beginning continues to give support, and he also said that after the recent developments, German Minister is planning to come to Izmir University of Economics on April for the second time.
Demirtaş indicated that they are continuously in touch with Goslar and said “The work group that is formed for the university that will begin to give education to 350 students in English and German in its first year came together again in Goslar. Izmir University of Economics Office of International Affairs Manager Asst. Prof. Tanju Oktay Yaşar and Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Head of Department Dr. Markus Wilsing went to Goslar and checked the area that will become the campus. Goslar Project Standing Committee Members met Goslar Mayor Dr. Otmar Hesse, assemblymen and businessmen and came back with affirmative news. In these meetings Lower-Saxon State, Ministry of Science and Culture stated that they also support the university foundation project. This university will be the first university that is founded by a Turkish University in Europe and the first European University. The university that will be the first European university will begin to give education in 2008.”
