INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION DAY EVENT
“September 30th International Translation Day” was celebrated with an event organized by English Translation and Interpreting Department of Izmir University of Economics. The ceremony started with the opening speech of Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, focusing on translation and the contributions of reading the world classics to cognitive wealth. The ceremony continued with the speech delivered by Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner, Head of English Translation and Interpreting Department, touching on the origin and significance of International Translation Day.
The ceremony continued with the reading of the declarations made by International Federation of Translators (FIT), Literary Translators Union (ÇEVBİR) and Directorate for Translation Coordination of Directorate for EU Affairs.
Following the declarations, Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Şahin, Assoc. Prof. Nihal Yetkin-Karakoç, and Lecturer Nilgün Dungan from IUE English Translation and Interpreting Department delivered their speeches highlighting interesting facts about their own fields while underlining the interdisciplinary nature of translation.
As part of the event, graduates of the department took the stage and shared their experiences with future translators, discussing their chosen career paths. Prof. Dr. Kansu-Yetkiner stated that the International Translation Day event, which has become traditional within the department, has also turned into an alumni day. She pointed out that current students’ meeting with graduates is both a source of inspiration and an important step in career planning for them.
